Free food.

For the last couple of weeks a bag of free food has appeared on my desk. Turns out the UrbanPromise high school is having a Sunday night cooking class through the local food bank.  The point of the class is to teach whole families how to cook a nutritious meal on a budget or from…

A Place at the table

This past week Jeff and I watched the documentary A Place at the table. It is heart-wrenching and infuriating all at the same time. One of the main characters is a 5th grader girl and another is a single mom from Philly.  We are planning to watch it as a family with the girls, not…

The Philly Skyline.

One of my favorite views in the world is the Philadelphia skyline.  I like seeing it from different angles, at different times of the day and in different seasons. Here is today’s view from a fundraising function that we attended this evening at the marina.

So saucy.

This week I turned this: Into this: In 4 easy steps: I am practically Martha Stewart.

Wanderings on the web.

Garden nerd alert, watch this timelapse of growing a giant pumpkin: Striking photos from years gone by: Annette Kellerman promotes women’s right to wear a fitted one-piece bathing suit, 1907. She was arrested for indecency See the rest of the photos here. My computer crapped out today, so that’s all folks!

Back to school night.

Just sat through 2 hours of a ‘Back to School’ night at the girls’ school.  Imagine a lot of PowerPoint presentations and way too much information and paperwork. Going to bed now.

Overheard.

Overheard at the post office: “Honey, I got so much money I don’t even know what to do with it all.” ~82 year old woman It took every thing in me not to stick my hand out or make some sort of snarky comment.

Kid update

Thanks to many of you who emailed, commented, prayed and sent messages regarding our girls. Your words of support and love get us through many lonely days here. I’m realizing more and more than parenting is full of joy, love, sleepless nights, days that want to make you tear your hair out, laughter and screaming. …

Best laid plans.

This morning Jeff and I had grand plans to drop the girls off at Sunday school and head to a local coffee shop. We need to sort some life issues and just enjoy an hour together. We made it 10 steps towards coffee (the shop is 50 steps away from our house) before we got…

NYC.

Today we decided to do a day trip up to New York City. Part of our thinking in accepting the call to live on the East Coast was to be intentional about trying to expose the girls to different experiences.  Now, New York is way too big to do in a day, but we walked…

Butternut squash lasagne.

If I was a real food blogger, I would have pulled out my DSLR and artfully arranged each step of making this butternut lasagne.  Instead you get this mishmash of shots and the link to the real food blogger here. I have not been able to recreate the 25 butternut squash harvest of 2011, but…

5 shots to the leg.

Up in the great white north, one has a choice regarding vaccinating one’s children. In fact, it is a hotly debate issue, with passionate people on either side. So, for us, our eldest was very up to date and the youngest barely at all.  This is mainly due to the fact that the Bear was…
